Black Pine (Pinus nigra) is a European native tree, growing evergreen from the Mediterranean coast to high mountains over 2,000 meters above sea level. It can be found as a single tree in isolated hard-to-reach locations or thriving in rich and dense forests. Its shape varies from conic to horizontal treetop form, which becomes irregular with age.

While it needs full sun to grow, being intolerant of shade, Black Pine can survive in extreme conditions (below -35⁰C) and is resistant to heavy snow and ice damage. It reaches the height of 40-50 meters with some trees ageing for over 500 years.

It can even grow on a stone surface with limited soil and water. Its roots then penetrate stone cracks, opening possibilities for other species to grow.
